Representatives from the Scottish Executive’s Supporting People programme today visited The Richmond Fellowship Scotland’s Older People’s Service at Hawthorn Court, Glasgow.
The Executive representatives, Alastair McIntosh, Head of Division, Stephen Sandham, Head of Policy and Finance and Norrie Murray, Finance Officer, joined Lead Officer Sharon Wearing from Glasgow City Council to assess the impact of Supporting People funding on the lives of the people supported at the service.
The Richmond Fellowship Scotland Chief Executive, Austen Smyth, introduced the representatives to service staff, relatives and supported individuals including Betty Lawson and Ruby Corr, who took the opportunity to express their satisfaction with the service, commenting on how people receive highly individualised levels of support and are encouraged to live more independently within the community.
Vincent Iles, Glasgow Regional Manager said:
“I was very pleased that representatives from the Scottish Executive joined colleagues from Social Work in visiting the Hawthorn Court service, experiencing first hand what a big difference Supporting People funding has made to people’s lives. It was a really good opportunity for those who use the service, their relatives and service staff to talk about their lives, choices and needs. I am very proud of the staff team who have ensured that this service has been a great success in enabling local older people to remain in their own homes with high quality supports available to them 24 hours a day.”
The Supporting People programme offers vulnerable people the opportunity to improve their quality of life by providing a stable environment which enables greater independence.
It delivers high-quality and strategically planned housing-related services which are cost- effective and reliable, and complement existing care services. The programme is a working partnership of local government, service users and support agencies such as The Richmond Fellowship Scotland.
