TRFS to host high profile Challenging Behaviour Conference

Learning disability expert Phoebe Caldwell will present at The Richmond Fellowship Scotland's high profile challenging behaviour conference in June.

Positive Approaches To Challenging Behaviour In People With Learning Disabilities and Autism will explore a range of positive approaches that have proved effective in helping people with challenging behaviour and their carers to manage complex and disturbing behaviours.

The conference, which will be opened by Shona Robison MSP, will examine The Richmond Fellowship Scotland's own approach to challenging behaviour and will feature the work of Phoebe Caldwell whose Intensive Interaction method has gained international recognition. In the morning session, Phoebe will set out the theory supporting her method and provide powerful examples of the success of the approach across a range of learning disability – particularly those with the most profound difficulties.

In the afternoon, there will be the opportunity to attend two workshops hosted by staff from The Richmond Fellowship Scotland. Workshop 1 will examine an approach based on a behavioural analysis method and Workshop 2 will examine an approach developed around establishing communication where spoken language is absent or much reduced. Both approaches that have been learned and adapted by support staff in The Richmond Fellowship Scotland's services and staff will share the difficulties and  frustrations as well as the successes.

About Challenging Behaviour
People with learning disabilities and autism who display challenging or distressed behaviour can be particularly difficult to understand for those around the person and presents services and carers with dilemmas in knowing how to respond. The nature of the behaviour may of itself be harmful to the person and frequently creates further problems within social settings.

These approaches can be readily learned and all are underpinned by strong ethical principles which respect the rights and dignity of the person.
