The Richmond Fellowship Scotland Presents…

“Intensive Interaction – with Phoebe Caldwell”

A practice-based seminar on methods for increasing positive interaction with individuals with autism, learning disabilities, and/or challenging behaviour

Many individuals with severe learning disabilities and/or autism present with challenging behaviour and can experience significant communication difficulties. These experiences often result in poor quality support, and sometimes even placement breakdown. For Care Managers and Commissioners, it can be challenging to access services which are able to successfully support individuals with complex needs within the community.

The Richmond Fellowship Scotland is therefore proud to present this exciting opportunity to attend a seminar by Phoebe Caldwell, an acknowledged expert in the field of Intensive Interaction. Intensive Interaction is a method of communicating with individuals with severe learning disabilities and/or autism who may have very limited communication and challenging behaviour.

Phoebe has written many books on the subject of Intensive Interaction, as well as been involved in numerous training events, research and publications. Outcomes of her Intensive Interaction work with individuals include: increased relaxation, less distressed behaviour, more enjoyment and improved quality of life. In particular, individuals demonstrate increased eye contact, desire to be close to others and increased social responsiveness.

In the context of an overall approach of Positive Behaviour Support, Intensive Interaction has proved successful in providing support to individuals with the highest levels of challenging behaviour and has enabled individuals to live successfully within their communities. This has led to improved quality of life for these individuals and has also attained significant decreases in incidents of challenging behaviour.

The approach is research-based and has been used with a range of individuals across the UK, with a wide range of needs, including learning disability, autism or other difficulties. Data is available to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach in the lives of individuals.
