Julia spent a long time in hospital before her family were advised to find a care home for her. However, they felt that Julia had not reached that stage and sought an alternative that would allow Julia to retain a greater degree of independence. Winnie's Story Winnie worked in Stobhill hospital for many years and has retained a desire to help people. She describes the ways in which her living arrangements enable her to continue to feel useful and also highlights the value of retaining her independence and a degree of privacy, secure in the knowledge that help is at hand, should she need it. Nelly's Story Nelly offers a carer's perspective and stresses the importance of being able to work in partnership with the care staff looking after her mother, rather than handing over control. Although she now needs assistance to go into the 'town' she describes how living five minutes walk from Glasgow City Centre enables her to go for her favorite walk down Sauchiehall Street.
